Onychomycosis is a fungal infection that affects the nails, mainly the toenails. The infection usually starts on the big toe nail, but it can spread to other toenails on the same foot over time. It is common for people with onychomycosis to also have athlete's foot, which is also produced by fungi, but in this case it only affects the skin.
It is a common infection that affects between 4% and 18% of the population. Its prevalence increases with age, and there are also more cases in some specific groups, such as athletes or diabetics.
